How Often Do Y'all Clean Your Filter?
Since getting back into the fish keeping later a long hiatus many things take changed and amazed me. Quondam I'll practise a thread on the changes simply for now I'll stick to the topic. Lately I've been reading the Internet (now there's a change!) constantly about fish. I of the noticeable items that keeps coming upward is - "I make clean my filter every calendar week", "every 2 weeks"' "every month", etc..... Sticking to just canisters and HOB's how ofttimes do you clean yours? Please listing the make, model and frequency and then we'll get a adept idea. Thanks.
Mostly... once a month maybe.. peradventure even less than that considering I get lazy. I have HOB for both 10 and v.five gallons, I think they're both aqua-tech filters... not sure what model though.
In my HOB filters, I clean it when I discover a subtract in flow. In my sumps, I clean my filters when the h2o level in the first cavalcade gets higher than usual. I have just one new canister filter which I am currently seeding and have nevertheless to clean information technology still.
For my display tanks, I only clean my HOBs and sump about once every month to month and a one-half; usually depending on the stocking density. Whereas in my tilapia growout tanks, I make clean the HOB and sump one time every other twenty-four hour period as the tank is very densely stocked. I am considering investing in a pulsate filter soon, reducing the need of me manually cleaning the gauze and sponges.
I clean all my HOB filter media, impellers and housings every 1-ii weeks. I clean my canister filter media and housing once every 3 months.
Of course, it all depends on what else has been going on in your tank. Changing substrate, adding plants or whatever, you should bank check your filter media to see if it's been gunked up.
For my cannister Eheim 2213 I make clean it out once every 3 - 5 months
for my aquaclear HOB filters seventy and 50, about once a month or so, or sooner if the media stack starts rising meaning the sponges are clogging
JimBob,
I bank check my 9 Aquaclear filters weekly, clean monthly. I rarely utilize carbon in them. But also have in tank sponges that get rinsed in tank water each week. My "checking" includes making sure uptakes are clean and flowing freely.

Only when there is a significant decrease in flow. Which is every couple of months or and so.... Some times longer. I take noticed that the younger the tank the sooner the filters demand service, not sure why this is the example.
I empty out and wipe my HOB (Marineland Emperor 280) every fourth dimension I practice a water change. I also rinse out the media in the old tank water, non very aggressively, simply a quick couple of swishes. Mine gets gunky very fast and impacts water flow if I don't, so it's function of my process at present. My sponge filter I accept out and squish around once a month. When I clean out the sponge I don't clean the HOB.
The shrimp tank I don't clean as often every bit it doesn't get messy, maybe once every couple of months I empty out the HOB (Tetra Whisper somethingorother) and rinse the media.

I did non know that I could get that long on my Air conditioning's. I'll endeavour but also go along an eye on them to insure they run correctly.
Eheim Pro 2222 canister - I merely service/clean/maintain information technology when flow rates have macerated to next to nothing, or the water is non equally crystal as it was (indicating the polishing pad is full)
Mostly one time every 4-6 months. Occassionally, if I've got a bit of spare time, and I can exist bothered, I might open it up and supercede the polishing pad anyway.
The only other time I might requite it a service is if my nitrates outset ascension - indicating a lot of stuff may be trapped in the filter.
Thunder o b,
Good signal! I have as well institute that "younger" tanks accept more budget. As the mature less chasing around is needed.
R
I accept HOB aquaclears:
110 AC on the 45 with discus - 1-2 weeks.
lxx AC on the 28G: two weeks
20 Ac on the 10G with a parrot fish: every 2 months
Alright... now I accept a question... how often should I clean the filter media on a Fluval U3?
The tank just finished it's cycle and all levels are property steady except nitrites and pH which goes up and down. NO IDEA why.
I have 2 tanks running now and a total of iii filters. In the thirty high I have a hob penguin 350/biowheels. I make clean this filter one time a week while doing wc. I rinse media in the old tank water replace media and refill tank. In the thirty long I have a canister filter and a ability caput /2sponges on information technology. Also on the inlet of the canister filter is a sponge. I clean all the sponges once a week also when doing wc. Rinse all sponges in used tank water supersede and refill. Canister is new four months old been tweaking information technology and I clean it when I notice a decrease in flow. Was every month merely I've removed nigh of the pads and filled it with bioball and other media. It'due south been running for two months now with not much of a subtract in menses. When cleaning it I rinse everything in used water.
Is this the norm or overkill. What's the normal cleaning routine? Not that I'thousand irresolute mine simply curious what others do.
I only wash my filters when the flow starts to ho-hum down, very rarely. In a canister I'd launder information technology every 3 months. In a HOB one time a month.
Full HOB filter clean including impeller chamber possibly every month or ii. Pre-filter every week or two as it gets clogged and reduces flow quickly.
I requite the media in my HOB filters a squeeze/scrub every calendar week when I do a WC. I disassemble and clean the tubing and propellers and everything whenever is starts making dissonance or period slows down, nigh once a calendar month.
Canister filters I try not to mess with since they are a hurting to open. I exercise a full cleaning whenever they makes weird sounds, every few months.
Really at that place's not too much or besides little cleaning so long as you don't destroy all your bacteria and the water flow is yet stiff.
I rarely clean my sponge filter. It is covered by algae and java moss anyways. Maybe every 3-4 months.
How-do-you-do. I clean my Penguin 350's every ii month's.
I take pre-filters on all intakes which I clean every one - 2 weeks. The filters (canister and HOB) don't go actually dingy, so I clean them every couple of months, sometimes just looking I to the canister and not seeing a problem
How frequently filters need cleaned will vary profoundly tank to tank depending on lots of variables such as how much you feed or overfeed, how messy your fish are, your filter itself, what's in it. Ok list would go on and on. I make clean mine about every v-6 months. Its an aquaclear 110 hob with 1 and 1/2 sponges and bag of ceramic media.
I change filter media once a calendar month and clean the filter itself only when parts of information technology go chock-full with algae, which isn't oftentimes.
I just clean my sump because its impossible to get khulI loaches out without completing draining it andvI javent establish a way to stop the footling buggers from getting in
I make clean my mechanical filtration every other 24-hour interval.
A filter total of organic waste is an ammonia and nitrite factory.
Clean my HOB filters near every weekly water change due to my bad well water gumming it up. Probably would be fashion less if I had good water.
Canisters? Ummm...some of them can get about a year before I clean them. The trick to that is no clog media and drastic over-filtering of the tank in general.
HOBs...normally when they kickoff to practice the whole water back washing where the intake sits I rinse the blue bonded media out. In the ACs I try not to bear on the sponges for at least 6months.
Sponge filters only get a rinse when they look brown instead of black.
IME the less you mess with your tank the meliorate off information technology will exist...I have never had issues with levels being off from under maintenanced filters.
Hobs I do weekly to every other week, prefilters weekly, canisters...hmm... depends on the tank... ane tank I clean every 2 months, some other tank information technology'south been at least six months (thanks for the reminder!), sponges I exercise monthly to every other month...
Someone here stated that it varies tank to tank, and I 100% agree, some tanks filters need more maintenance depending on the bioload, plants, etc... not every bit much based on the filter type...
often if I see nitrates higher up where I want I give information technology all a good cleaning
Agree varies from tank to tank, merely brand sure y'all use tank h2o when doing the cleaning. HOB'southward sponge every 2-three weeks get a rinse, total cleaning around 2 months. Canister every 2-3 months. Central cistron for me is one time I discover lower water output its time.
HOBs when the water starts past passing the filter media, and Canister peradventure in one case every other month.
I take a x gal with a tetra pf 10 filter likewise every bit a sponge filter in the tank.
I know I demand to rinse them in tank water as I'g doing a water change to ensure I don't kill whatsoever leaner, but how often should I practice it?
Thank you in accelerate.
Just shake them out in the bucket of old tank h2o once every week or ii
I would rinse them every bit soon as you lot see the catamenia of water coming out of the filter back into the tank getting low.
One time a month is about correct.
Merely shake them out in the bucket of old tank water in one case every week or 2
Should I do both at the aforementioned time or should I alternate? I only don't want to create any more issues than I already have. I'grand a little bit "gunshy" when it comes to this stuff.
Every iii-4 weeks or one time a calendar month, use a bucket of tank water as stated higher up
Good luck !
Could I get some clarification on this process please. My tank is 6 weeks erstwhile, has completed its commencement cycle. All my API tests are cracking, just obviously my Nitrates are hovering around 20ppm. Would rinsing my media sponge help lower this? I practice weekly WC of 25% religiously and without fail and take 14 Electric Yellows in a 75G tank.
I have non rinsed or cleaned the media sponge since day 1.
Thanks for your ideas and thoughts.
20ppm is perfect. Merely gently shake the cartridge in the bucket of one-time tank water later a change once a month or so. Don't ever rinse it in tap
This is a stupid question... But isn't the cartridge the affair that holds the bio handbag, carbon bag, and sponge? Could you apply a tub full of new tap h2o that is dechlorinated or does information technology accept to exist in sometime tank h2o?
20ppm is perfect. Just gently milk shake the cartridge in the saucepan of erstwhile tank h2o later a change once a calendar month or and so. Don't always rinse information technology in tap
Thanks BiggerIsBetter. Much appreciated. Results to my question on Google are soòoo varying depending on where you lot read. It was nice to know my API results are exactly where the need to be when it comes to Nitrates.
... Only isn't the cartridge the affair that holds the bio bag, carbon bag, and sponge?
When people refer to the catridge, they refer to the holder of the media and the media - I guess information technology just something that people say to shorten the desciption.
Could you employ a tub full of new tap h2o that is dechlorinated or does it take to be in former tank h2o?
The reason it is recommended to use tank water (non old tank water), but tank water that is taken directly from the tank at the fourth dimension you want to rinse your filter is that this water is identical to the h2o that the leaner is living in, then the chances of decimating your bacteria colony is really small.
If you use dechlorinated tap water, you may have a different h2o temperature, pH level, hardness or other chemicals in the h2o that could consequence your bacteria colony or in the worst case kill it off completely.
Promise that makes sense
Ok I'm having a really hard fourth dimension completely following the steps in this thread. I demand to rinse my filters tonight and later reading this I realize I have been doing it all wrong. I accept an internal water whisper filter 10 gallon and Silenstream 20 power filter for a 20 gallon tank. In the past I take been rinsing all my media and sometimes when its been a while since I cleaned it the whole filter head under only regular tap. UGHH... No wonder I have gone through minI cycle later on minI wheel....
Should I practice both at the same fourth dimension or should I alternate? I just don't want to create any more issues than I already have. I'grand a picayune scrap "gunshy" when it comes to this stuff.
I would alternate. Clean i during a h2o modify, clean the other during the next wc.
